MCDCs mission is to change the social, educational, economical, cultural, and physical course of the center city of Evansville, Indiana and surrounding communities; as well as the lives of the people that live there.
The Youth, Education, and Diversity committee is focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) principles to share information.
The young adult gardening team is learning about the science and planning of a garden. One lesson included vermicomposting and recycling. Another class focused on soil chemistry based on soil testing. Discussion also included soil preparation for planting. The MCDC team planned what vegetables they wanted to grow, when to plant seedlings and seeds, and where to plant for maximum sunlight to help the vegetables to thrive. Additionally, the MCDC gardening team has reached out to the surrounding community to give away free tomato and zinnia plants.
SWIMGA and MCDC will continue to work together through the summer and into harvest discussing plant care and harvesting. The MCDC team plans to share produce in the community and prepare nutritious meals with the harvest
