July 2023 UPDATE: The harvest has begun at the display garden. Volunteers prepared a 37-pound harvest on June 21 to be taken to Nativity food bank. In 2022 we harvested over 3,000 pounds, which is more than 4,000 dollars worth of donations to the community! Vegetables go to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Nativity Food Pantry, and Salvation Army and Ozanam Family Shelter.
Master Gardeners volunteer their time in all aspects of the garden, from tilling to planting harvesting. The vegetables are harvested and delivered to the Tri-State Food Bank where local Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens pick up the vegetables they need for serving the needy.
The vegetable garden year started in 2021 with composting of part of the garden inside the fence (rabbits love our vegetables). The broccoli loved the composting area! This was our teaching area as a “no till” and to increase organic mulch.
The 2022 season started with seeding broccoli and cabbage in February at the U of E Greenhouse. Seeding of summer crops was followed by planting, weeding, watering, picking, watering, composting, watering, spraying, picking, etc. As of September 2022, nearly 3,000 pounds had been harvested on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. That is more than a $4,000 donation to the community! Vegetables go to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Nativity Food Pantry, and Salvation Army and Ozanam Family Shelter.
