The Herb Garden at University of Southern Indiana is located in the Outdoor Recreation Area between Grimes Haus and Eicher Barn, both authentic log structures relocated to USI. The garden was designed and installed by a local garden club several decades ago and maintenance responsibility was assumed by SWIMGA in 2017.
The fenced garden is a quilt block design with brick pathways separating 12 raised planting beds. It is planted with an eclectic assortment of herbs including culinary herbs such as oregano, basil, sage, parsley; natives as sweet woodruff and bloodroot; and assorted plants used in traditional remedies and concoctions. Although edible, marigolds are added to attract pollinators and provide color.
Scheduled work times are the second Monday and fourth Saturday during growing season and we work from 8:00 -10:00 am. Everyone is welcome to stop by the garden any time for a visit to see the plants or a quiet rest on the benches. Bent Twig Trail walkers frequently stop by to check on the garden or say hello.
