Herb Garden

The Herb Garden is located in front of the Cabin at the Master Gardener Display Gardens.  It has a tri-circular design and contains annual and perennial herbs.  The three beds contain a wide variety of herbs, and listed below is a brief summary of some of their most popular uses.

Aromatic Herbs –  Lavender, misc. mints, rosemary
Culinary Herbs – Basil, chives, French tarragon, lemon grass, lovage, oregano, stevia, misc. thymes
Decorative Herbs – Bee balm, catmint, pineapple sage, red-veined sorrel, winter savory
Medicinal Herbs – Echinacea, lemon balm, misc. mints, German & Roman chamomile
Herbs as a Compost Activator &/or Natural Fertilizer – Comfrey, yarrow
Herbs that Attract Pollinators – Anise hyssop, basil, catmint, chives
Herbs as Insect Repellents – Catnip, citronella, lavender, peppermint

Note: Marigolds are one of the most popular herbs used because they attract pollinators, repel pests, provide beautiful color, reseed well, and their flowers are edible (depending on the variety).

Dried and fresh herbs were used by settlers to flavor foods and for food preservation.  They would also use their own herbs to make herbal teas for medicinal purposes since doctors weren’t always readily available.
