SWIMGA partners with Habitat for Humanity to provide beautifully landscaped homes for families in need in the Evansville area. Our volunteers handle the initial design of the landscape plan, seed the lawn, select the plants, prepare the soil, and beds before planting, and finish with mulch for the beds and straw for the lawn. The partner families work with the volunteers and receive instruction on proper planting and care of their plants and lawn. Twice a year Master Gardeners teach classes for newly approved families on the care and maintenance of their landscape.
JUNE 2024 UPDATE: Our Habitat team completed plantings at thirteen homes this spring. The shrubs, perennials, and trees added are the “icing on the cake” of these beautifully built homes. There is nothing more inspiring than to speak to a homeowner in the morning and see their smiles when they are told they get to come home to a landscaped house. Each workday, our volunteers landscape the front of two homes in only two to three hours. We work hard, love what we do, and enjoy the camaraderie of our Habitat crew. There is a great sense of accomplishment as we travel through our work site neighborhoods. It really shows us how we are contributing to building a better community. We will soon receive a list of homes to be landscaped in the Fall from Habitat. If you are interested in joining our group, we would love to have you!
Mary Bischoff and Lisa Jackson took the mantle from the shoulders of Fran Vix and Carol Cates at Habitat for Humanity in the spring of 2024.
Fran Vix and Carol Cates began working with Habitat in 2007 with the New Haven Subdivision, built after the devastating tornado of 2005. Since that time, they and their team of Master Gardeners have landscaped 266 homes, while helping those families learn to care for their lawns, shrubs, and gardens. According to Sister Jane Michele McClure of Habitat, “Habitat is most grateful for all that Fran and Carol have done and the long-lasting partnership Master Gardeners has forged with Habitat for Humanity!”
