How a barn quilt came to be installed on the Cabin at the Display Garden

In 2015, Kay Haller (Display Garden Chair) approved a barn quilt design that would be displayed on the cabin at the Display Garden. The design that I had shown her was on a 2X2 which would be enlarged to a 4X4 prior to installation.

During the spring of 2016, the 4X4 was attached to the north side of the cabin – centered between the door and the west end of the cabin. This piece was constructed of a sealed 4X4 birch sheet with 2X4 treated lumber supports.

The design was a Texas Star, a six- point geometrical design with a four- point star in the middle which was measured and superimposed on the 4X4 so that each part is mathematically correct. Acrylic paint was used for the design and background. All of the colors were hand mixed to complement each other and project the geometrical design. Two coats of sealer were applied to protect the paint.

The Barn Quilt has become part of the MG Display Garden. It is an icon for the community and a reference point for visitors seeking the gardens.
